Assessments

To Opt-Out of Assessment at Avalon, please return this form to our office: Parent/Guardian Participation Guide and Refusal Information.

The following list includes information on each major assessment Avalon School employs, the dates when they occur, the average time required to complete them, and the justification for their use.  For any questions regarding Avalon's use of assessments, please contact Tim Quealy (Tim@avalonschool.org).

NWEA MAP Math and Reading - Fall (9/16 to 9/19) and Spring (3/24-3/28 for HS, 5/5-5/8 for MS):

NWEA MAP test is used to measure progress from fall to spring.  It is used with all students grades 6 through 10.  Students complete both a math and reading test, and each takes appoximately 35 minutes.  The NWEA MAP scores are used as part of an authorizer (NEO) goal. The fall NWEA Assessment will be used as our designated Universal Screener for the READ ACT.

PSAT - Fall (10/25/25):

The PSAT is given to all 11th grade students in the fall.  It is used as a measure of college-readiness and we report our scores in our Annual Report.  The PSAT has three sections (Reading, Writing and Language, and Math) and takes 2 hours and 35 minutes to complete.

ACT plus Writing Test - Spring (3/11/25):

It is required for Avalon to offer the ACT to all 11th grade students by the state of Minnesota.  The test has five sections (English, Math, Reading, Science, and Writing) and takes 3 hours and 35 minutes.

WIDA ACCESS - 3/17/25

MCA Tests - Spring:

The MCA tests are required by the state of Minnesota.  While the tests are not timed, they typically take one to two hours each, and may span more than one day.

4/10-4/11: MCA Reading - 6th, 7th, 8th grade

4/16-4/17: MCA Math - 6th, 7th, 8th grade

4/18: MCA Math (11th) / Reading (10th)

4/21-4/22:  MCA Science (8th / 11th)

Testing Results and Dissemination of Assessment

Fall and Spring NWEA results are shared directly with families at our family conferences.

MCA and ACCESS results are mailed to families after publicly posted for sharing.

PSAT & ACT results are shared with families once provided to the school.
